I just wanted to share with you about my apple butter making. If you own a crock pot and a large pan with a lid that fits tightly, you are in business for storable and giftable apple butter. If you would like my crock pot apple butter recipe and the processing for long term storage instructions, just drop me a line. You won't be disappointed. ANd it does give lots of time for crochet while it's making itself. :-)

[...] I cooked alllll day long on Thanksgiving and made the very pie that graced Martha Stewart’s Living last month! It turned out tasty, but not exactly what I expected, and with the 3 hours+ involved, I’m not sure I’d make it again. Also on the menu were: green been crudites with sage dipping sauce, pumpkin pie, cubed spicy sweet potatoes, chive mashed potato casserole, homemade applesauce and popovers with apple butter.
Okay, while I realize this is a post about Apple Butter--I just had to say I'm so thoroughly excited by the fact that there is a "popover" cafe. Popovers have to be one of my favorite foods--and tragically I have been in withdrawl in my post Smith years. The fact that there is an entire cafe dedicated to the delight that is popovers...fills my heart with joy. Yep, I know where my next NYC lunch is going to be at.

two things:
1) we always made our applesauce chunky, so gadgets were unneccessary. we all peeled and cored all the apples before cooking, and then just tossed em in a pot.

2) I've been making cranberry pear butter recently. you cook 2 cups of cranberries and about 5-6 pears in apple cider and some spices, and just keep cooking, then can. very pretty color, nice tangy/sweet taste. I highly recommend trying it! it's good on sweet stuff like scones and pancakes as well as a spread on stuff like turkey sandwiches.

There's a gadget for making apple sauce? Other than a sauce pan and potato masher?

[...] Create! wrote an interesting post today on Making Apple ButterHere’s a quick excerpt [IMG applebuttermain.jpg] Even though I am in the habit of cooking and baking from scratch, apple butter is one of those food items I associate with being jarred and found at a roadside farm stand in Massachusetts, without any knowledge or curiosity about how it got that way. It’s untouchable, and thus, I had never even wondered about how to make it until a week ago when I found myself with a lot of extra apples. I was apple desserted-out, but I don’t have the gadget for making applesauce, so [...]
